Could revenue from tariffs replace income tax?

President Donald Trump has suggested that revenue from tariffs potentially replace income tax.
He said in a Fox News interview that tariffs were the main source of revenue for the U.S. in the late 1800s and through 1913, and when that was the case, the U.S. was essentially at its richest or most prosperous.
Trump also said in the Fox interview the U.S. is making billions of dollars from reciprocal tariffs over a period of a year -- tariffs he put a pause on as he opens up negotiations with affected countries. He wants deals that benefit the U.S. While some are concerned about the strain of the tariffs ... do we not want a president fighting to take financial burden off the nation's hard-working citizens? To get our debts lowered by pulling in funds from countries that rely on us to buy their products?
They need us. They need your dollars.
Without risk, there's little reward. The idea of tariffs replacing income tax is sounding more appealing each day. More money back in my pocket? Yes, please. This can only benefit those of us in Southwest Ohio, in Montgomery, Greene and the surrounding counties, who work hard for every dollar and need our tax load lightened.
We are taxed out.
We need to get the trade deficit lowered, plain and simple. It will be interesting to see what the President does with this idea of eliminating the income tax.
