It is imperative to put tariffs in place if we want Mexico, Canada and China to help us with illegal immigration. President Trump is taking steps like this to push countries to help us alleviate the crisis.

There's a lot at stake, and Trump's administration knows it. But that's the point: We are willing to take the risk to find solutions to one of the nation's largest problems. Here's a direct quote from the White House's fact sheet:

"President Trump is taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country."

Some people are clear on why we have concerns with illegal immigration from Mexico, but need more clarity on why Canada. Here is the White House's response:

"There is also a growing presence of Mexican cartels operating fentanyl and nitazene synthesis labs in Canada.  A recent study recognized Canada’s heightened domestic production of fentanyl, and its growing footprint within international narcotics distribution."

Simply put, having access to our economy is a privilege, not a right, and the Trump administration wants these large countries to understand that. A tariff is a tool this administration can use to force change and to help our trade economy.

The border crisis saw unprecedented levels during the Biden administration. Trump has to clean up the mess and get the U.S. back to being secure.
